Dental Examinations

Dr. Ellen gives all of her patients a warm, friendly welcome and loves answering questions from parents and children alike. When everyone knows what to expect, checkups and cleanings are a breeze! Kids feel acknowledged, and they can relax for extra gentle cleanings and quality care.

During your child’s exam, we’ll inspect the health and development of their jaw, teeth and gums, looking for early signs of common oral health concerns. Our staff will perform a thorough, gentle cleaning of the teeth. If we see any minor issues, Dr. Ellen will advise on improvements to hygiene habits and/or technique. She’ll also suggest minor dental work (like sealants to protect cavity-prone spots), as needed.

What to Expect
at Your Child’s Checkup

At Im Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, we have more than a few moms that work in our Poway office—so if you’ve got a nervous patient, we’ve got plenty of patience and compassion to help them… not to mention headphones, TVs, iPads and kids’ books. We’ll also offer a warm blanket to snuggle up in, and sunglasses if the examination light seems a little too bright. Children are special, and that’s how we treat them!

Sealants and Fillings

Cavities are a common dental concern, so Dr. Ellen inspects teeth thoroughly to detect the first sign of tooth decay. The good news? Early detection of weak spots means less invasive treatment—Dr. Ellen offers sealants that provide a barrier between vulnerable areas of the tooth, which guard against bacteria that will further erode the area. If a cavity has already formed, she’ll fill it with composite resin, which blends in naturally with the natural color of your child’s teeth and prevents further decay.

Fluoride Treatment

Dr. Ellen offers Silver Diamine Fluoride treatment in Poway which helps strengthen your child’s tooth enamel. Silver Diamine Fluoride treatment is a non-invasive liquid topical solution to treat dental caries lesions. Silver’s antibacterial properties have been known for centuries and its low toxicity makes it ideal for use in humans. Fluoride increases the rate at which tooth enamel can be remineralized by saliva and increases the enamel’s resistance to harmful acid. Although there are few side effects of tooth staining, tissue staining and contact irritation, there are many benefits of using SDF. Strong enamel shields teeth against cavity-causing bacterias in the mouth to help prevent tooth decay.
