What Is a Dental Emergency?
Displaced, knocked out, cracked or chipped teeth:
If your child’s teeth and/or mouth tissues are damaged from an accident, avoid touching the affected area. Leave everything as intact as possible. If there are loose pieces, place them in cold milk or saliva to keep them wet—and handle teeth by holding them at the crown (top) area, not by the roots. Your child may rinse gently with warm water. Apply an ice pack to the outside of the check to reduce swelling.
Foreign objects:
If an object has become lodged in your child’s teeth, leave everything in place—let Dr. Ellen remove the foreign object with expert hands. You may floss the teeth gently and rinse with warm water. If the object remains in place, call our office.
Extreme Toothache:
A terrible toothache, especially accompanied by a fever, is a sign of severe infection. Do not apply aspirin or other medication to the sensitive areas—seek expert medical help. Have your child rinse with warm water and apply an ice pack to the outside of their cheek to help with swelling and reduce pain.
